It took a little time for Pearland to get rolling against Manvel, but once they did, the Oilers came away from Freedom Field with a 42-18 win over the Mavericks.
Pearland improves to 4-1 on the season and 3-0 in District 22-6A action while Manvel falls to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Manvel got the opening kickoff, and it took only three plays for them to find paydirt as they scored on the third play of the game when QB Cam Renfro found a streaking WR Kahlil Ali on a 67-yard touchdown pass. The PAT was blocked leaving the Mavs with an early 6-0 lead with 11:12 left in the first period.
The rest of the opening quarter left both teams trading possessions until Pearland finally got on the scoreboard with 10:00 remaining in the second quarter when QB Jake Westmoreland found a streaking WR Jordan “The Jet” Hernandez on a 25-yard scoring strike. Kick Zane Adler hit the PAT and the Oilers had a 7-6 lead.
Both traded punts until the Mavs scored again on another long scoring bomb covering 88-yards from Renfro to WR Antoine Wilder with 1:01 left in the second period giving the Mavs a 12-7 lead after the PAT was no good.
Pearland would close the first half with an explosion as the Oilers would score twice in the final 36 seconds of the second quarter.
The first score came on a 21-yard scoring toss from Westmoreland to RB Tate Chisolm who had slipped behind the Manvel defense for an easy touchdown grab. Adler hit the PAT, and the Oilers were back on top 14-12 with :36 left before intermission.
After the ensuing kickoff, the Mavs set up at their own 24 with :30 seconds remaining before halftime.
Instead of just running out the first half clock, Manvel lined up in the spread offense and opted to try a screen pass, but the Oilers were ready as LB Sam Armstrong stepped in front of the intended receiver, picked off the pass, and weaved his way 18-yards for the score to give Pearland a 21-12 halftime lead.
The Oilers opened up the second half by marching down the field to score on a 36-yard scoring pass from Westmoreland to WR Nicolas Fernandez who was wide open on a broken defensive assignment to give Pearland a 28-12 advantage with 9:29 left in the third quarter.
“The Jet” Hernandez had two key catches from Westmoreland in the drive to spark the offensive score.
Manvel would manage to put one more score on the board with 3:55 left in the third on a 23-yard scoring pass to narrow the gap to 28-18.
Meanwhile, Pearland would put their final stamp on the game with a 1-yard scoring run by Chisolm with 10:11 left in the final quarter and Westmoreland would put a dagger in the Mavericks with a 1-yard keeper with 2:17 remaining in the contest to post the 42-18 final score.
Westmoreland had a superb game passing as he hit 13-of-19 for 247 yards and three TDs while picking up 18 yards on five carries and a TD.
Hernandez was the leading receiver with seven grabs for 97 yards and one score while Fernandez had 3 catches for 96 yards and one TD.
Chisolm had 18 carries for 62 yards and one score while Cam’Ron Bush had 16 totes for 61 yards.
The Pearland defense held Manvel to one-yard rushing on the ground and 274 yards through the air.
The Oilers finished with 145 yards rushing and 247 yards passing for a total of 392 yards.
Pearland (4-1, 3-0) and Dawson (3-2, 1-2) will meet in the annual PearBowl on Friday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. at the Pearland ISD Stadium. Dawson leads the series 6-4.
