Defense, Hernandez, Westmoreland shine in 42-7 win over Dobie
A fast start by Dobie saw Sr. running back Cameron Matthews score on a 65-yard jaunt with less than a minute gone in the game for a 7-0 lead over Pearland.
That would be as good as it would get for the Longhorns for the rest of the game as Pearland’s rushing defense allowed only 33 yards for the rest of the game while the Longhorns were able to pick up 56 yards through the air for a total of 154 yards of total offense.
A lot of the credit has to go to Pearland’s defense and their five sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Sam Armstong and Amari Wilks, who racked up four sacks between them. Wilks also set a new season high mark in total tackles with six.
Meanwhile, the Oilers filled the sky with a strong passing game and ground attack while piling up 491 yards of total offense (243 rushing, 208 passing).
Junior QB Jake Westmoreland threw four touchdowns with two going to junior WR Jet Hernandez (34 and 39 yards) while senior TE Logan Johnson caught a 3-yard scoring toss and senior RB Tate Chisolm snagged a 23-yard scoring strike.
With 8:24 left in the third quarter, Westmoreland and Hernandez reversed roles as The Jet took a handoff sweeping right, stopped and threw back to Westmoreland who had released down the left sideline to catch the lofted missile from Hernandez for the 14-yard scoring pass to make the score 35-7.
Pearland would add one more score with 3:45 remaining in the final period when RB Ryan Miler would break through the Dobie defense for a 9-yard score to post the final 42-7 score following the PAT by Zane Adler who nailed 6-of-6 in the game.
The Oilers built a 28-7 advantage at intermission.
Chisolm led the ground attack with 11 carries for 146 yards and one catch for 23-yards and a score.
Westmoreland was 10-for-13 for 175 yards and four TDs.
Hernandez continues to be the go-to receiver as he had five catches for 100 yards and two TDs.
Pearland improves to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in district to remain in a tie with Shadow Creek who has same record. Both teams sit atop the district standings.
The Oilers will host Pasadena Memorial [2-5, 0-5] on Friday, October 18 at 7:00 p.m. The Mavericks lost to Shadow Creek last week 52-0 and are looking for their first district win this season.
