Pearland pounds Sam Rayburn 59-0 in district opener
It was the Jordan “The Jet” Hernandez show in the opening quarter against the Sam Rayburn Texans as the speedy wide receiver hauled in three scoring passes from junior QB Jake Westmoreland covering 48, 31, and 52-yards to spot the Oilers to a 21-0 in the opening twelve minutes.
Hernandez finished the game with seven catches for 168 yards and three scores to lead the Oilers to a 59-0 win in the District 22-6A opener for both teams.
As the game progressed, there were plenty of others who got in on the scoring parade to help the Oilers to a 1-0 start in league action and a 2-1 over mark on the 2024 season.
RB Tate Chisolm opened up the second quarter with a 1-yard scoring run to make the score 28-0 following Zane Adler’s fourth straight PAT.
A few minutes later, Chisolm scored again on a 27-yard run with 5:06 remaining in the opening half to increase the lead to 35-0.
A just before intermission, Adler hit a 32-yard eld goal as time expired for a 38-0 lead at halftime.
While the offense was not being challenged by the Sam Rayburn defense, the Pearland defense was suffocating the Texans offense as they held them to -44 total yards including -42 yards rushing.
Pearland added three more scores in the second half as Cam’ron Bush scored on a 34-yard run with 3:18 left in the third quarter to make the score 45-0.
On the final play of the third period, sophomore RB Ryan Miller scored on a 3-yard plunge to make the score 52-0 following the PAT by Adler.
With 4:20 to go in the final period, Pearland scored again on a 13-yard pass from QB Steven Craft to WR Hammad Hasan to post the 59-0 final score.
Leading the offense was junior QB Jake Westmoreland who was 8-for-11 passing for 173 yards and three TDs. Craft was 4-for-6 passing for 46 yards and one score.
RB Cam’ron Bush led the ground attack with 11 carries for 100 yards and one TD. Chisolm had six totes for 62 yards and two scores.
Hernandez led all receivers with seven catches for 168 yards and three TDs.
Pearland (2-1) will host the Alvin Yellowjackets (1-2) on Friday, September 20 at The Rig at 7:00 p.m.
