After Pearland built a 35-9 lead in the third quarter, Dawson came thundering back to cut the lead to 35-29 on a 3-yard keeper by QB Max Zavala with only :06 left in the third quarter.
Welcome to the 11th annual PearBowl between cross-town cousins.
When Pearland scored on a 29-yard scoring strike from QB Jake Westmoreland to WR Jordan “The Jet” Hernandez to make the score 35-9 with 7:34 remaining in the third period, it appeared that the Oilers had the game well under control.
But Dawson wasn’t going away despite the deficit as they took advantage of three fumbles by the Oilers that resulted in three scores for the Eagles to close the gap to 35-29 at the end of the third.
With 5:23 left in the third, Dawson RB Jerimiah Treadaway scored on a 1-yard plunge to make the score 36-16.
Following a Pearland fumble, Treadaway scored again on a 69-yard scoring burst to cut the margin to 35-22 after the 2-point conversion was stopped for no gain.
The Eagles took advantage of another Pearland miscue to score on a 3-yard keeper by QB Zavala to make the score 35-29 to a shocked Pearland crowd while the Eagle fans realized they were back in the game.
With 11:40 left to go in the fourth period, the Oilers began their next drive at their own 25. The Oilers offense took 12-plays and six-minutes and 10-seconds off the clock to score on a 1-yard plunge by RB Tate Chisolm to make the score 42-29.
The touchdown by Chisolm was his fifth score of the game which tied an individual scoring record for the most touchdowns in a game by a Pearland player.
Dawson got the ball back to try to close the gap but the Pearland defense stiffened in the end and denied the Eagles another score.
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first with 6:05 left in the opening period as Treadaway scored on a 16-yard run. The PAT was blocked, and Dawson had a 6-0 lead.
But Pearland quickly took the lead on a 18-yard run by Chisolm, the first of his five rushing touchdowns, with 4:41 left in the first. The PAT by Zane Adler hit the mark and the Oilers were up 7-6.
The touchdown was set up by a 45-yard run by Chisolm to the Dawson 22.
Pearland’s next score came on a 5-yard scoring run by Chisolm to make the score 14-6.
After a missed 46-yard field goal by Dawson, Pearland increased the lead on a 5-yard run by Chisolm to complete a 7-play, 71-yard scoring drive for a 21-6 advantage with 4:39 remaining in the second quarter.
Dawson went on a 12-play, 61-yard drive that stalled at the Pearland 8 forcing the Eagles to settle for a 25-yard field goal to make the score 21-9 at intermission.
The Eagles still lead the PearBowl series 6-5.
Westmoreland was 9-of-12 passing for 151 yards and one TD.
