“We have a close-knit family within our coaching staff,” Heath said.
“Wives are friends with each other, their kids play with each oth-
er, and it’s really a family atmosphere. I’m very
fortunate to have the coaches with the families
that they have. Being a coach’s wife or girl-
friend, you have to be a special person because
a lot of times they have to be mom and dad.
“This state championship didn’t just happen
overnight,” Heath said. “It was the culmination
of 14 years of hard work by each team who laid a winning tradition
for Pearland football.”
Heath, who is the winningest coach in PHS history, now has a ca-
reer record of 187-49 over the past 19 seasons which marks one
of the most incredible turnarounds by any team of any class in the
state of Texas.
The 2010 squad proved that when players play together and be-
lieve in one another - they can accomplish much.
But the journey didn’t end for the Oilers in 2010.
For the second time in school history, the 2013 Oilers made it to the
Class 5A Div. I state title game. Despite a valiant effort, Pearland
fell to the defending state
champion Allen Eagles. But
they did capture the 5A Div. I
Region III crown on the way
and knocked off a talented
San Antonio Madison team
38-34 to win the 5A Div. I
state semifinals to finish 14-2 on the season.
The most important thing was that the Oilers were still dancing in
the final game of the season while everyone else was at home.
In 2014, the Oilers once again advanced to the post-season after
closing out the regular season at 9-1. Pearland beat Deer Park in
